Tell us what you have. We find a local nonprofit that may be able to pick it up.
One form, matched to a local nonprofit. Tell us what furniture you have and where it is. We send your request to the nonprofit thrift partners that serve your area; when one can use your items, they pick them up at no charge and put them back to work in your community. A match isn’t guaranteed. Partners accept items based on condition, demand and their route, and if no nonprofit can take yours, we can pair you with a Priority Pickup provider for a fee instead.
How free furniture donation pickup works
- Enter your zip code. We check which nonprofit and priority partners serve your address.
- Describe your furniture. A couch, a dining set, a dresser: tell us what it is and its condition. Photos help the partner decide faster.
- Pick your preferred days. Free nonprofit pickups are scheduled in advance, usually within a week or two depending on the partner’s route.
- Get matched. You’ll get an email confirmation right away. A partner that can use your items typically reaches out within 24 to 48 hours to confirm a time. If no partner is able to take them, we’ll let you know your options, including Priority Pickup.
What furniture qualifies for free pickup
Nonprofit partners pick up for free because they can resell the item in their thrift store. That covers the truck, the fuel and the crew. So the rule of thumb is simple: if you’d be comfortable selling it, they’ll be glad to pick it up.
Usually accepted
- Sofas, loveseats and sectionals in clean, intact condition
- Dining tables and chairs, kitchen sets
- Dressers, nightstands, chests of drawers
- Bed frames and headboards
- Desks, bookcases, entertainment centers
- Coffee and end tables
- Patio furniture in good shape
- Working appliances, in many markets (ask when you submit)
Usually not accepted for free pickup
- Mattresses and box springs (most providers can't resell them; some will take one as part of a larger load)
- Tube TVs and older electronics
- Furniture with rips, stains, pet damage, broken frames or missing parts
- Flat-pack furniture that has been disassembled
- Single small items on their own (a lone lamp or side table). Bundle them with a larger donation and they're welcome.
Every partner sets its own list, so you’ll confirm the specifics with your provider once you’re matched.
Furniture that isn't sellable? We can still get it out
If your couch has seen better days, you’re clearing out a whole house, or no nonprofit partner is able to take your items, choose the Priority Pickup option on the same form. Priority providers are local haulers in our network who take items regardless of condition, can often come within a day or two, and charge a fee they quote you up front. Anything they can donate on your behalf, they do.
Where we pick up furniture
Our network of more than 1,000 nonprofit and priority partners covers all 50 states. Availability varies by zip code, item and each partner’s capacity that week, so a match isn’t guaranteed everywhere. Some of our busiest furniture pickup areas:

Why donate furniture instead of tossing it
A sofa in a landfill takes decades to break down. The same sofa in a nonprofit thrift store funds a local mission, whether that’s a rescue shelter, a housing program or a community center, and ends up in a home that needs it. Since 2012 the PickUpMyDonation network has routed millions of dollars in donated goods to nonprofits across the country.
Frequently asked questions
Is furniture pickup really free?
Yes, when a nonprofit thrift partner in your area accepts your items. They pick up at no charge because they resell what they collect. We can’t guarantee a partner will accept every request; if none can, or you choose Priority Pickup, the provider charges a fee and tells you the amount before you commit.
How soon can someone come?
Free nonprofit pickups are scheduled around the partner’s routes, so plan on a few days to a couple of weeks once a partner accepts your request. Priority Pickup providers can often come within one to two days.
Do I have to be home?
That depends on your provider, the weather and where the furniture is. Many partners will take items from a garage or porch if you arrange it with them in advance. Confirm when they contact you.
Will they carry furniture down from upstairs or out of an apartment?
Policies vary. Some nonprofit crews do curbside or ground-floor pickups only; others will come inside. Mention stairs, elevators and building rules in your request so we can match you with a provider that can handle it.
Do you pick up couches and sofas?
Couches are one of the most requested items and most partners take them, as long as they’re clean and intact. Sleeper sofas and sectionals are fine; note the number of pieces in your request.
Do you pick up mattresses?
Most nonprofit partners don’t accept used mattresses. If a mattress is part of a larger donation, ask; some will make an exception. Otherwise a Priority Pickup provider can take it for a fee.
What if I only have one item?
A single large piece like a sofa or dresser is usually fine. A single small item on its own typically isn’t enough to cover a nonprofit’s trip, so pair it with other donations if you can.
Is a pickup guaranteed?
No. PickUpMyDonation matches your request with partners in your area; each partner decides whether it can take your items based on condition, resale demand and its schedule. Most furniture requests in good condition do get matched. If yours isn’t, you’ll hear from us with next steps, including fee-based Priority Pickup.
