How Goodwill furniture pickup actually works, by region

There are three patterns across the country. Check your regional Goodwill’s website (search your city plus “Goodwill donate”) to see which applies to you.

  • No pickup at all. The most common answer. You bring furniture to a donation center or store during drop-off hours. Some regional Goodwills also decline furniture entirely because they don't have the floor space to sell it.
  • Pickup through a paid partner. Regional Goodwills such as Greater Milwaukee & Chicago and New Jersey & Philadelphia route furniture pickups to third-party haulers like ReSupply or a local furniture bank. The pickup is convenient, but you pay a service fee that varies with the size of the load.
  • Free pickup in a limited area. A small number of Goodwills run their own trucks, typically within a set radius of their stores and often with a minimum donation size. These fill up fast and are usually scheduled a week or more out.

What Goodwill generally accepts (and what it doesn't)

When furniture is accepted, the standard is the same as at most thrift stores: clean, intact, and sellable as-is.

Usually accepted at drop-off

  • Sofas, chairs and tables in good condition
  • Dressers, bookcases and small cabinets
  • Lamps, rugs and home decor
  • Small working appliances and electronics

Commonly declined

  • Mattresses and box springs
  • Upholstered furniture with stains, tears or pet damage
  • Large appliances and built-ins
  • Tube TVs, console TVs and older electronics
  • Anything broken, disassembled or missing parts
